Springdans Northwest
Friday, April 11 to Monday, April 14, 2025

The Skandia Springdans Northwest dance and music camp will be held at the Seabeck Conference Center on the Kitsap Peninsula in Washington State. The teaching will focus on Swedish dances and music; the evening parties will include dances mostly from Sweden and Norway, with some from Denmark and Finland.

The dance teachers, Margareta and Leif Virtanen, live in Norberg, Sweden. They lead the Norbergs Folkdansgille and teach the Furudal medal-testing training course. They earned their Big Silver medals in 1989 and a special Gold medal in 2019 for their work to preserve and disseminate Swedish dances.

Riksspelman Greger Brändström is from Sveg, Härjedalen. In his youth he played with the local spelmanslag, where he was exposed to older tradition bearers. In 2024 he won the Lapp-Nilsmedaljen from the Jämtland/Härjedalens Spelmansförbund, honoring his dedication to preserving and spreading folk music from Jämtland and Härjedalen.

Riksspelman Henrik Wikström is one of the most active traditional fiddle players in the Jämtland/Härjedalen region. He developed his love of traditional music when studying at the Malungs Folkhögskola. Henrik teaches and collaborates with notable Härjedalen and Jämtlamd fiddlers.

Anna Abraham is a deeply talented nyckelharpa player from the PNW. She studied for a year at the Eric Sahlström Institute in Sweden, where she developed great skill, and returned to play, compose, and teach nyckelharpa music in the Seattle area.

Applications with payment must be postmarked by February 14, 2025, and are considered in postmark order. There is no part-time option. Supervised children are welcome.

Scholarships are available for young people! Please encourage them to attend. The Jane Isakson Lea
Foundation is funding 6 full scholarships for people 35 or under. Email lisa@hambo.us about your Nordic
dance or music interests and financial need, and register by January 15 (best if earlier) without paying. There may also be funds to help other attendees; email a request early for information.

Help preserve the Meeting House floor at Seabeck Conference Center
Jerry Walsh and Judy Patterson are making an individual (not Skandia) plea to assist Seabeck to repair and refinish the floor of the Meeting House at Seabeck.  Below is part of their request:

    "Our first Springdans on the new floor was April of 2003...It was fantastic. It stayed that way for the next ten years, or so. Subsequent years have not been kind to the floor. The finish has worn through in many places and some areas have been severely water damaged.

The best bid for the work came in at $16,000. This includes replacing about 60 square feet of damaged flooring. The deposit is paid, and the work is scheduled for January 6-18, 2025. This will give the floor plenty of time to cure before our next Springdans in April!

I invite you to participate! You can do so by making a tax-deductible contribution to Seabeck Conference Center. Just specify that it is for the Meeting House floor. Please do so before the end of January 2025. Let me (Jerry) know your pledge amount ASAP, since I’ll need to know how much to transfer from our IRA to cover the balance. If, by some miracle, your contributions add up to more than the cost, Judy and I will still donate $5,000 to Seabeck. I’m hoping we can establish a Floor Account so there is money available for repairs and maintenance on an ongoing basis...
Please consider helping us on this project. Springdans is like a jewel embedded in the year. Think of the floor as the setting for the precious music, dance, and joy we all experience while in the Meeting House."
