On Zoom
Finnskogspols Music workshop with Eva Karlsson March 1, 2025 from 9 - 11:30 a,m. Pacific VIA ZOOM Registration is required.
Experience finnskogs pols with top fiddler Eva Karlsson. This online music workshop will focus on the asymmetrical rhythm and huge forward drive that make it unique. Don’t be fooled – this diminutive and somewhat shy person plays, in the words of a Midwest fiddler, “like the devil himself.” At least one local Seattle fiddler says, “She plays finnskogs pols like her pants are on fire.”
Eva explained to Martha Levenson that although she is usually associated with dance music from the Finnskogen and Värmland, she grew up north of Örebro. Popular there were Närkelåtar, and Eva has earned the title Riksspelman for the playing of these tunes. She says that, “some of my favorite songs are among the first that I learned.”
After the “Finnskogs boom” that happened around the year 2000, Eva spent time in the archive in Trondheim, together with Bjørn Sverre Hol Haugen, Veslemøy Nordset and Anton Schneider. Looking at old films, they analyzed and then worked on the character and the steps.
Eva is known as strong and vibrant fiddler and says she likes music when it’s “a little dirty under the nails.” But, she asserts that the most important thing is the swing. This is a large part of what the focus will be on at the workshop and why she is so valued as a dance fiddler. Come and learn some tunes, work on styling, and have a blast!
